NTERNSHIPS : OVERVIEW AND KEY DIFFERENCES

An internship is a professional learning experience that provides students with practical work related to their field of study or career interest. It offers an opportunity for career exploration, skill development, and hands-on experience. For employers, internships bring fresh ideas and energy into the workplace, help in talent development, and can serve as a pipeline for future full-time hires.

Key Features of a Quality Internship:

Includes a part-time or full-time work schedule with no more than 25% clerical or administrative tasks.
Provides a clear job or project description.
Introduces the student to the organization, its culture, and the proposed work assignments.
Assists the student in developing and achieving specific learning goals.
Offers regular feedback to the student intern.

Differences Between Internships, Cooperative Education (Co-op), and Research Experience:

Internships: These are structured, supervised learning experiences within a professional setting, providing valuable work experience related to a student's field of study. Internships typically require a minimum of 120 hours, usually involving at least 10 hours per week during the academic year and either part-time or full-time during the summer.

Cooperative Education (Co-op): Co-ops are paid positions where students alternate between full-time work and full-time academic study over at least two semesters. These positions often lead to full-time employment upon graduation. While co-ops are less common at UMBC, interested students should consult with staff to design a suitable structure for their experience.

Research Opportunities: Available both on- and off-campus, research experiences provide students with a deep understanding of their academic interests and insight into potential graduate studies. Funding for research opportunities may be available through organizations such as the National Science Foundation (NSF).

What Student Interns Can Expect:
To gain substantial work experience and contribute meaningfully to the company, avoiding menial tasks.
To have a mentor who offers guidance, feedback, and professional modeling.
To develop skills and experience in a specific field.
To build professional connections.
To gain exposure to upper management.
To receive an orientation to the company’s mission, goals, rules, regulations, and procedures, and to meet fellow employees for future assistance.

By participating in an internship, students can enhance their professional skills and gain valuable insights into their chosen career paths.
